Continental Style Knit and Purl

Knit Stitch

Picture
The Knit stitch is the foundation for everything we do in knitting.  Learn to make it well and you will be off to a great start!

Ktbl

The Knit in the Back Loop creates a stitch which twists at the base.  This forms a denser fabric with visual texture.

Knit in the Stitch Below Is created by literally working through the center of the knit stitch below the live stitch on your needle.

Knitting Backwards

Picture
Knitting "backwards" is simply a way to make your purl stitches without having to turn your fabric.  You will create a knit stitch on the right side of your fabric and a purl stitch on the wrong side of your fabric just as if you had made a purl.  This technique can be quite useful when making short rows and when working in entrelac just to name a few.  You will need to watch your tension when working with this at first.

Purl Stitch

The Purl stitch is the companion to the Knit.  With the addition of this stitch to your knowledge you will be able to open up a whole new world of texture and design.

The Purl through the Back Loop is the compliment to the ktbl.  When you combine them together you get a twisted stockinette which can provide a beautiful change of texture and a nice dense fabric.
